For each <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">leader, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">there is a struggle to look bravely ahead to what might be coming, without succumbing to the counter-productive effects of panic.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\" data-wac-het=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">While this is clearly different, we\u2019ve been <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">reflecting on<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> the principles which have helped us as a team through previous upheavals including the Arab Spring and 2014-16 oil price crash. Neither event had the same global breadth of impact as coronavirus likely will, but they did pose threats to our business and even t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">h<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e health of our staff on occasion.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\" data-wac-het=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> have summarised here three principles that we will<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> be trying to apply in our <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">teams. In a noble effort not to burden their team, they may keep staff at a distance from the planning and re-organising efforts. While at times this is essential, there are many times where it is not necessary \u2013 and actually very unhelpful for staff well-being.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\" data-wac-het=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Everyone thrives on having a sense of purpose and being able to take action to affect change. One of the worst feelings is of helplessness. As leaders, we can help to empower our teams by bringing them into the planning and decision making process, giving people a voice and allowing people to take on responsibility.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\" data-wac-het=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Here are a few practical things we\u2019re doing:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\" data-wac-het=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><ul><li data-leveltext=\"-\" data-font=\"Calibri\" data-listid=\"1\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Increasing the frequency of the whole team meeting together. You didn\u2019t hire stupid people: they know something is up!<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\" data-wac-het=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the Coronavirus outbreak, anyone watching the news will be aware <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of the possible impact on jobs and other areas of life very important to them. Silence from leadership can make <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">them<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> worry that <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">mangers aren\u2019t <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">taking risks seriously and planning adequately. Or,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> equally negative, they can begin to imagine that the worst possible case is happening, or else the leaders would have shared what was going on.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\" data-wac-het=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Uncomfortable as it can be, sharing bad news early and talking with the whole team about potential scenarios will help them through this tough time. Here are some things we\u2019re trying to do:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\" data-wac-het=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><ul><li data-leveltext=\"-\" data-font=\"Calibri\" data-listid=\"1\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Scenarios. <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Given things are uncertain, we\u2019re talking about different scenarios and sharing our ideas about how to respond at each level. While trying to show we\u2019re not expecting the worst case, we also want to communicate that we are preparing for it<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\" data-wac-het=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul><ul><li data-leveltext=\"-\" data-font=\"Calibri\" data-listid=\"1\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Two way. <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We\u2019re giving space for everyone to share how the news is affecting them and be heard. We also want to benefit from everyone\u2019s practical ideas. A great question for a leader to ask is \u201cwhat do we want to be like after the outbreak\u201d.
