rapid growth<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7561aa4c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7561aa4c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There are a number of factors that make leadership development in Qatar unusual.\u00a0 <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Qatar\u2019s fast economic growth and industrialisation has been relatively recent.\u00a0 <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">O<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">il ha<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> been produced in Qatar since the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">40s, but it was the export of LNG in the 90s that started a much faster pace of change and development.\u00a0 Consequently, industrialisation is relatively new and still in the process of becoming institutionalised.\u00a0 In addition, Qatar\u2019s <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">fast-growing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> economy has resulted in a significant increase in the number<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> foreign work<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">er<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s coming into the country<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">nearly 90% of the population is foreign.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335559740&quot;:260}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 1em;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">The government\u2019s strategy <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1em;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">is to <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1em;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">develop <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1em;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">nationals rapidly to enable them to take senior roles in the country.\u00a0 A consequence of this strategy is that<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1em;\" data-contrast=\"auto\"> time <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1em;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">to <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1em;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">learn by progressing through the different layers of an organisation <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1em;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">is <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1em;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">limited<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1em;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1em;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">Also, a national leader will be leading a team with a far greater cultural diversity, and far less team members of the<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1em;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">ir own<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1em;\" data-contrast=\"auto\"> culture than most leaders in global corporate settings.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1em;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">These two factors<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1em;\" data-contrast=\"auto\"> coupled with the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1em;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">previously mentioned<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 1em;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cnewness\u201d of Qatar\u2019s industrialisation provide a unique setting for leadership development programmes.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1em;\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335559740&quot;:260}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1de217dd elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"1de217dd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_helpful_ideas_to_bear_in_mind_when_designing_leadership_programmes_for_Qatari_leaders\"><\/span>3 helpful ideas to bear in mind when designing leadership programmes for Qatari leaders...<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-11768bd4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"11768bd4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Develop_relationship\"><\/span>1. Develop relationship\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Our experience is that successful development of nationals takes place through the development of relationship.\u00a0 It is tempting to design and deliver <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">fast and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> short <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">interventions,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> but we have rarely seen these <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">types of interventions <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">have significant impact.\u00a0 Where time is given to develop relationship there is opportunity to build trust and then more impactful conversations can take place.\u00a0 We have just completed a leadership programme for a group of nationals that has taken two years to deliver.\u00a0 The slow and gentle development of relationship over the different modules and coaching <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">sessions <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">has resulted in significant trust.\u00a0 This trust has provided the foundation for individuals to talk about real leadership challenges and identify ways forward.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-765347bb elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"765347bb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Facilitate_leadership_contextualisation\"><\/span>2. Facilitate leadership contextualisation\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Significant chunks of leadership theory <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">are rooted in Western thinking which has a Greek<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, individualistic<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> origin.\u00a0 Qatari culture does not have the same roots and values <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">some<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> things<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> differently<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0 <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> helpful approach is to facilitate nationals contextualising leadership concepts and ideas.\u00a0 Central to this approach is the choice and willingness<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> of the training provider<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to listen, discover and respect.\u00a0 If this happens successfully<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">a powerful two-way conversation can take place to allow nationals to shape how leadership concepts can be applied <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to their context<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0 This requires <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a degree of <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">humility from the training provider<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and an expectation that the development of ideas on how to apply leadership <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">models<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> will come from those being trained.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-373b6e9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"373b6e9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Provide_opportunity_for_practice\"><\/span>3. Provide opportunity for practice\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Knowledge of leadership principles and methods is important and helpful.\u00a0 But <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">this knowledge on its own<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> does not have a direct <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">correlation<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> with leadership competence.\u00a0 As with most skills, we need opportunity to <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">practice<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">using<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">knowledge <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">we have<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> so that we can become skilled<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0 <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">W<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hen we <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">practice<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> we learn by getting it wrong, by failing.\u00a0 In fact, it is difficult to learn something well without first failing <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">several<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> times.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335559740&quot;:260}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 1em;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">For nationals, getting <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1em;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">a <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1em;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">chance to <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1em;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">practice<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1em;\" data-contrast=\"auto\"> leadership skills is <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1em;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">unlikely as <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1em;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">fast development track<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1em;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1em;\" data-contrast=\"auto\"> leave little opportunity for learning on route.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1em;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">And because <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1em;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">nationals<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 1em;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">occupy<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1em;\" data-contrast=\"auto\"> positions of considerable responsibility, learning through getting things wrong in the workplace is highly undesirable.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1em;\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335559740&quot;:260}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 1em;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">Delivering training opportunities where there is <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1em;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">a <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1em;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">chance to <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1em;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">practice<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1em;\" data-contrast=\"auto\"> leadership skills in a safe environment is very valuable.\u00a0 We have found business simulations and exercises designed to replicate leadership situations highly effective.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1em;\" data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0 Participants can practise, make mistakes and learn from them in a safe environment.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1em;\"
