Understand the goals of mentoring<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4d53f0f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4d53f0f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Good mentoring can provide some or all of the following:<\/p><ul><li>Transfer of skills and knowledge<\/li><li>Expand professional networks<\/li><li>Contribute to the development of the given profession<\/li><li>Increase awareness of current theories and ideas<\/li><li>Improve management, leadership and communication skills<\/li><li>Reflection on current projects and office practice<\/li><li>Provide accountability<\/li><\/ul><div>\u00a0<\/div><p>Why is the mentoring taking place? It is essential that the mentor and mentee identify and agree clear goals for their mentoring relationship.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a6541b8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"a6541b8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Get_the_admin_right\"><\/span>2. Get the admin right<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-95fd081 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"95fd081\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>A good relationship between mentee and mentor is essential but it does not just happen by putting them both in the same room.\u00a0 We have found good foundations are laid by doing the following:<\/p><ul><li>Ensure the professional development goals of the mentee match the areas of expertise of the mentor<\/li><li><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">Create a written and agreed schedule for meetings.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem; color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">Mentoring is expensive in terms of time, especially for the mentor who, by definition, will be doing a significant role. \u00a0Getting a fixed schedule of agreed meetings will help set expectations<\/span><\/li><li>Fix an end time to the mentoring sessions.\u00a0<span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-size: 1rem;\">Agree to six sessions or so and then review. This gives the mentor and mentee clear expectations as to the timescale of the meetings.<\/span><\/li><li>Sign an agreement that sets out clear expectations for each party.<span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-size: 1rem;\">This may sound a little heavy but it does add gravity to the arrangement and helps both parties to give the arrangement importance<\/span><\/li><li>Meet in a location that is conducive to the meeting.\u00a0<span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-size: 1rem;\">Sitting in the corner of the mentor\u2019s office, with regular interruptions does not necessarily create a sense of \u201cfocus\u201d for the meetings<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ed2474c elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"ed2474c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Build_respect\"><\/span>3. Build respect<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bf91c58 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"bf91c58\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Mentoring is built on the idea that the mentor has something to give to the mentee in terms of knowledge and experience.\u00a0 This implies the mentee is ready to accept this.\u00a0 It is not always the case. Our experience is that the mentee often fails to recognised the mentor\u2019s experience and wisdom.<\/p><p>In this case it is important to find routes to give information of the mentor\u2019s experience.\u00a0 A mentee will not know what the mentor has done in the past unless informed. \u00a0Respect is built partly, on a full appreciation of what the mentor has done in the past. This will need to be communicated.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c4fc9f3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"c4fc9f3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Deliver_mentoring_sessions_with_skill\"><\/span>4.
